Bad Genes, Part Two

“Are we going to Dream and April’s wedding?” Katarina Allen asked.

Dominic Clancy put aside the dossier he was reading and gave his girlfriend his full interest, “I guess so.”

It was hardly an enthusiastic affirmation, but Kat would take it. Scooting herself so she was on Dominic’s side of the bed she inquired, “You know about the costumes, right?”

The Man of Might looked down at the young woman massaging his bicep, “Oh, no.”

“It’ll be fun,” she cajoled, “Seeing everybody dressed up.”

“No.”

“Why not? You wear your superhero costume all the time.”

“Two points,” Dom raised a pair of well-callused fingers to check them off, “First, I’m not a superhero. Second, it’s a uniform.”

“What’s the difference between costumes and uniforms?” Kat asked not unreasonably.

“Uniforms are functional. They have a purpose. Costumes are just worn in a bid for attention.”

“Uh huh. Then Dream has?”

“A costume.”

“Jay?”

“Costume. The man wears a cape, for God’s sake.”

“I won’t even bother to ask you about Lisa. Dancer?”

Dominic considered, “Uniform. She is obviously very… theatrical, but her manner of dress is utilitarian, compared to what other dancers wear. Headdresses. Spangles.”

“No, she saved those for you,” Kat teased the big man about his suit’s stars and stripes, “You’re parsing terms.”

“Heh. Maybe.”

The trim blonde snuggled closer to her boyfriend; “I just think it would be fun to wear something bold and iconic. There’s nothing wrong with showing off sometimes, especially when it’s to honor the wishes of two people who have gone out of their way to make a person feel welcome in a very complicated household.”

“Hrm. Fine. I’ll go in costume.”

“Great,” there was an expectant pause, “As what?”

“Mr. Epitome.”

“Cheater.”

“Yes. What’re you wearing?”

“Wait and see. I’ll give you a hint, though: we’ll match.”

“Hm. You’re going as Jingo Belle?”

“You wish,” Katarina made a sour face at the notion of wearing a bikini in October.

“Liberty Valerie?”

“Who?”

“I think that’s the girl’s name. She’s a vigilante operating out of Paradopolis,” Dominic explained.

“Never heard of her.”

The American Archetype shrugged, “Apparently I’m her inspiration to fight crime. You probably wouldn’t want to wear her outfit either: no pants.”

“Well, that’s nice. Not the pantsless part, but the rest. That you motivated her to be a superhero too,” Kat brought the conversation back to the other of Dominic’s assertions she wanted to confront.

"I suppose," the Paragon of Power refrained from pointing out his effect on the woman would hardly be positive if she got herself or someone else killed while in the line of duty, that it wasn’t his job to inspire, but to protect, “I look forward to seeing what this mystery costume is, regardless.”

“Super,” Kat replied coyly, and she leaned over to put out the light.
